Mitchell, Andrea. Talking back—to presidents, dictators, and assorted scoundrels. [Updated, with new introduction]. New York : Penguin Bks., 2007.
Millions of TV viewers may feel they already know Mitchell—she has reported on politics for NBC for some 30 years and is married to the Fed's Alan Greenspan—but there's lots to learn about her in this engrossing memoir. Mitchell began as a “copyboy” at radio station KYW in Philadelphia in the 1970s. After covering the major political conventions for them, she was hired by NBC and headed to Washington. Shortly after, she flew to Guyana for her first major story: the 1978 Jonestown massacre. She has covered all the presidents from Carter through George W. Bush, done exclusives with Castro, sat in on high-level negotiations in the Middle East and North Korea, and much more. Mitchell’s tales are fascinating, but her evolution as a journalist is even more intriguing. She was a gender pioneer, for example, but her gender rapidly became a non-issue. Yet her original insistence on a clear separation of work and social life seems progressively undercut by her own account. She mentions many dinners with dear friends like the Cheneys, and parties with the Bushes, Rice and Rumsfeld, and then wonders why the media got the Iraq WMD question so wrong. Still, this is a treat for political junkies. (From Publishers Weekly).

921 SILVIN
Walking the Rainbow : An Arc to Triumph. Whitmore Pub Co, 2009.
Richard Rene Silvin seemed to have it all. After overcoming a childhood of emotional neglect and trauma, much of which has been shared through the honest and brutal pages of his first book, I Survived Swiss Boarding Schools, Silvin transcended his past to lead an enviable life of power and world travel during a career in international hospital management. After decades of shame and hiding his sexuality, this handsome and successful man became true to himself, came “out,” and burst forth into the hottest gay spots in Florida, California, New York, and Europe. Supported by beloved friends and eventually buoyed by finding his true love, Silvin could be seen as riding on top of the world. All that glitters however is not always gold. A new phase of emotional and physical horror for Silvin and many others was on the horizon. Silently creeping its way into the life of so many during the late 1970s and early 1980s – including Silvin - was the then-mysterious illness to later be known as AIDS and caused by the as-yet unidentified human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). His professional life in cutting-edge international health care allowed Silvin to work with colleagues ahead of the curve in terms of HIV research, diagnostics, and medications. Yet he, his friends, and his partners fought overt discrimination and numerous painful, life threatening complications of the virus, which in a grisly succession eventually claimed all those dear to him, despite their hard fought and heroic efforts. Selfless and courageous, Silvin shows in Walking the Rainbow an astonishing fortitude and willingness to persevere while overcoming tremendous physical obstacles as well as psychological and emotional trauma of the deaths of so many held so dearly. Through his own Arc of Triumph, Silvin will redefine what it means to succeed, even to thrive, while living with AIDS.

White, Richard, 1947-. Remembering Ahanagran : storytelling in a family’s past. 1st ed. New York : Hill and Wang, 1998.
Professor Richard White of the University of Washington has produced a fine example of the oral historians’ craft. He recounts the historical tales learned from his mother who had emigrated to the United States from Ireland in 1935 and married Harry White. She was Irish-Catholic; he was Russian-Jewish. He was a Harvard graduate and an army officer in World War II. The author has gone far beyond what would be expected in a family oral history. He has detailed the stories, identified the participants, and located the places. Sara White’s memories are far more than history. Her memories provide a firm foundation upon which the insights of many immigrants can be built. Her clear understanding of her own family’s traditions—as a child in Ireland, as a new arrival in Chicago, and as a wife, mother, and an American—represent a microcosm of immigration history.
