Thirty-year-old Matt Younger returns to his parents' Florida home with a heavy heart. Guilt-ridden over the death, years earlier, of his brother, an Olympic-caliber swimmer, and over his recent unsuccessful stint as a boat captain, he's come home to find redemption by sitting vigil at his father's deathbed. He determines to tell his dad the truth, no matter how ugly, about the circumstances surrounding his brother's death and his own desperate bid to make a killing by running drugs in the Turks and Caicos islands. As Matt spends night after night pouring out his story to his father, a veteran sailor himself, he tells of one misadventure after another involving a loyal French mechanic and a hard- bitten criminal masquerading as a cook. He also reveals his love for a Dominican prostitute looking to escape her squalid life. First-novelist White's lyrical style sometimes works and sometimes falters against the grittiness of his story. Still, lovers of the sea and adventure will appreciate the long, poetic passages paying tribute to the skills of a sailor and the dangers of deep water. -BOOKLIST.

Richardson, Peter, 1959-. A bomb in every issue : how the short, unruly life of Ramparts magazine changed America. New York : New Press : Distributed by Perseus Distribution, c2009.

A Bomb in Every Issue tells the largely untold story of the wild ride of this hugely influential magazine that achieved countless firsts: it published the first conspiracy theory about JFK's assassination, it was the first to reveal that the CIA had backed the National Student Association during the Cold War, and its article about the use of napalm on Vietnamese children (another first) caused Martin Luther King Jr. to speak out against the war for the first time. Launched in 1962 as an intellectual Catholic quarterly, within five years Ramparts had become a secular magazine and won a George Polk Award for "its explosive revival of the great muckraking tradition." Deeply committed to the civil rights and antiwar movements, its contributors included Noam Chomsky, César Chávez, Seymour Hersh, Angela Davis, and Susan Sontag. It was in its pages that Che Guevara's diaries and the prison diaries of Eldridge Cleaver (which became Soul on Ice) first appeared. Although by 1975, out of money and time, it had folded for good, Ramparts left an important journalistic legacy, influencing a generation of reporters and editors that is still apparent today.

644 STO
Stoyke, Godo, 1963-. The Carbon Buster's home energy handbook : slowing climate change and saving money. Gabriola, B.C. : New Society Publishers, c2007.

Most people are unaware that environmental problems such as climate change can be easily avoided, at a profit, through the intelligent application of appropriate technology. The Carbon Buster's Handbook describes how to achieve this goal in the residential field. The handbook reveals North America's best-kept investment secret: that the highest rates of return can be found not at your bank, but in your home! Environmental problems such as climate change can be easily avoided, at a profit, through the intelligent application of appropriate technology. The first book in North America to provide a detailed carbon accounting of a family's carbon emissions and how to reduce them, it systematically analyzes energy costs and evaluates which measures yield the highest returns for the environment and the pocketbook. It provides answers to questions such as: Which measure is more effective: putting solar panels on your roof, or buying a hybrid car? Where do I need to invest first: in high-efficiency shower-heads, or solar tubes? Is a 500 dollar fridge that uses 800 kWh of power per year a good buy? The book allows individuals to quickly and accurately assess which products are a good deal and which aren't. It systematically analyzes residential carbon emissions and energy costs and prioritizes solutions based on highest carbon reductions and monetary returns, yielding results that are often surprising. While government savings bonds may yield a financial return of around 5% per annum, and pension funds in 2005 yielded 11%, the Carbon-Buster strategies described in this book have an average annual return of 32%. The book enables readers to dramatically reduce their carbon emissions far below the levels targeted under the Kyoto Protocol. At the same time, readers implementing the recommendations will save an average of US 15,000 dollars in energy costs over the next five years.

Kelly, Leisha. Julia’s hope. Grand Rapids, Mich. : F.H. Revell, c2002.
From a fresh new voice in Christian fiction comes this simple, well-told story of one family’s experience of love, generosity, forgiveness and faith during the Great Depression. Samuel and Julia Wortham and their two young children leave Harrisburg, Pa., with only eight dollars and three bags containing all their worldly goods. They’re hitchhiking to Vernon, Ill., where there is the promise of a job and a roof over their heads. Along the way, the family stumbles onto a deserted farmhouse belonging to the elderly widow Emma Graham, who was forced to leave her home because of her health and longs to return. As Julia works out a solution to her family’s troubles and Emma’s, the small farm promises to be a haven and place of healing for all concerned, if the neighbors don’t interfere. George Hammond’s farm adjoins Emma’s, and he sees the interlopers as moving in on his territory, while spinster Hazel Sharpe is determined to see her version of justice done. Kelly tells the story from several different points of view, handling the switches smoothly and changing voices believably. The faith threads in the novel are gently woven in, rather than feeling forced or contrived, and the writing is beautifully descriptive without being overdone. (Publishers Weekly).

Schubart, Bill, 1945-. The Lamoille stories : tales of Vermont. White River Junction, VT : White River Press, 2008.
Author Bill Schubart brings to life the friends and characters of his native Lamoille County, where in the late 1950s and early 1960s, life was lived close to the earth and often against the grain. Schubart’s collection of twenty-two stories captures Vermont in its transition from an enclave of hill farms and small towns where everyone knew your grandfather to a place where vehicles bearing license plates from “away” mix with hippie vans filled with born-again Vermonters getting back to the land…until snowfall. It’s a time and place where the Jeeters of The Lamoille Stories rub elbows with the ladies of the Uplift Club, all to the fiddle accompaniment of Québécois music played by people whose conversations often weave French and English together in a single sentence. Schubart’s full-hearted and compassionate evocation of this Vermont is by turns poignant, funny and savory. The stories give readers a good excuse to stay up too late to discover how Wyvis will circumvent the new Vermont prohibition on having more than three junk cars in your yard or how Charlie is going to get Edgar to pay him for his new chimney. Schubart’s thoroughly enjoyable short story collection is as finely etched as the frost crystals on your winter window.

Thurman, Wallace, 1902-1934. The blacker the berry-- 1st Scribner Paperback Fiction ed. New York : Scribner Paperback Fiction, c1996.
One of the most widely read and controversial works of the Harlem Renaissance, The Blacker the Berry was the first novel to openly explore prejudice within the Black community. This pioneering novel found a way beyond the bondage of Blackness in American life to a new meaning in truth and beauty. Emma Lou Brown’s dark complexion is a source of sorrow and humiliation—not only to herself, but to her lighter-skinned family and friends and to the white community of Boise, Idaho, her home-town. As a young woman, Emma travels to New York’s Harlem, hoping to find a safe haven in the Black Mecca of the 1920s. Wallace Thurman re-creates this legendary time and place in rich detail, describing Emma’s visits to nightclubs and dance halls and house-rent parties, her sex life and her catastrophic love affairs, her dreams and her disillusions—and the momentous decision she makes in order to survive.A lost classic of Black American literature, The Blacker the Berry is a compelling portrait of the destructive depth of racial bias in this country. A new introduction by Shirlee Taylor Haizlip, author of The Sweeter the Juice, highlights the timelessness of the issues of race and skin color in America.
